Leadership Dialogue: Evidence, Judgment, and AI in Research

Format: Curated dialogue + audience interaction

Johan Luthman
Mats Sundgren

About this session

This session replaces the traditional panel with a focused leadership dialogue between Mats Sundgren and Johan Luthman, Head of R&D at Lundbeck, exploring how artificial intelligence is influencing decision quality in research-intensive environments. Rather than technology demonstrations, the conversation centers on how evidence, human judgment, and algorithmic recommendations interact when critical scientific and organizational decisions are made.

Positioned in the “Setting the Scene” segment of the Main Day, the dialogue frames the fundamental question of how research organizations evaluate knowledge, responsibility, and rigor when AI becomes part of the decision process.

Example questions include:

  • When does AI genuinely improve decision quality — and when does it merely accelerate
    uncertainty?
  • How should evidence be interpreted when algorithmic outputs challenge established scientific
    assumptions?
  • Who ultimately owns a decision when human expertise and machine recommendation
    diverge?

The session invites audience reflection and interaction, aiming to surface methodological and leadership insights that contribute to the evolving CLAIR Research Agenda.
