
Nathan Lea, PhD, is an independent consultant who is working with i~HD as their Information Governance Lead and Data Protection Officer where he focuses on understanding evolving regulations and ensuring they are implemented so that they enhance innovation, discovery and impact to improve health and social outcomes. His career has explored the balance between enhancing outcomes through data driven innovation and ethical, equitable and transparent practices. This drives Nathan’s work in regulatory compliance and accountability where keeps a keen interest in understanding the legal, ethical and societal impacts and concerns around novel health data uses, particularly in the area of Artificial Intelligence for health care and research.
Nathan has held roles in academia, public and third sector appointments including the Trusted Research Lead for Cancer Research UK’s Cancer Intelligence and Research Data Strategy Directorates, the Information Governance Lead for the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust NIHR Biomedical Research Centre Clinical Research Informatics Unit and a Senior Research Fellow at UCL where his research and teaching focused on understanding legal, ethical and security requirements for Big Data driven clinical research.
